A LITTLE HISTORY
by Antonio De Angelis
The family-run
restaurant originated
back in 1931 when my father, Francesco, a native of Poggio Cancelli (LAquila),
realized his ambition and was appointed by the management of the Grand
Hotel Quisana of Capri to run the restaurant. After a successful and rewarding
two years, he decided to open a trattoria just around the corner from
the Piazzetta di Capri called Savoia in honour of one of his first customers,
a sailor from the vessel Re Umberto di " Savoia ". The trattoria
quickly became not only a place to eat, but one where writers who came
to spend the winter on the island met. They included Norman Douglas, Graham
Greene, Kenneth Mac Pherson, Curzio Malaparte and others. In 1951, forced
to move from the premises - which he did not own - he purchased the place
where the present-day La Capannina is located. From 1961, together with
my wife Aurelia and later on with the help of our children Francesco and
Renata, I personally took care of running it. I inherited the love and
enthusiasm for the restaurant business from my father along with the commitment
and attachment to the profession, which has made it possible for La Capannina
to become a " must " for all the celebrities visiting the island
such as Onassis and Jacqueline Kennedy, Versace, Armani, Rocco Barocco,
Valentino, Carla Fracci, Adnan Kassogi, Marcello Mastroianni, Christian
De Sica, Julia Roberts, Dustin Hoffman, Carlo Verdone, Dario Argento,
Jose Carreras and many other internationally-known celebrities, along
with many loyal customers who come from around the world and continue
to prefer our restaurant. For the last few years, during the winter season,
we have been providing our cuisine with considerable success to numerous
hotels belonging to a famous Japanese hotel chain, accompanied by our
kitchen staff.
